Surgery for Gingival Recession

Gingival recession is defined as the retraction or moving away of the gums from the teeth. It is a very common dental problem found in about 15% of the adults. Some causes of gum recession are: periodontal disease, trauma, anatomic susceptibility, aggressive tooth brushing habit and tooth position. Other factors that contribute to this problem are: genetics, vitamin deficiencies and teeth grinding.

When gum recession is left untreated, it leads to aesthetic compromises and if recession progresses without treatment; it eventually leads to root sensitivity, tooth decay, loss of supporting bone, and tooth loss. Receding gums cause the gums to appear uneven, unhealthy and unattractive.

Two Types of Gum Tissue:

There are two types of gum tissue in the mouth.
The first layer is dense and bright pink colored. This layer of gum collars around the neck of the tooth. This gum tissue is similar in constancy as that to the skin on the palms of our hands. This tissue protects teeth and keeps the gum tissue from receding.
The second one layer is a loose and movable type of tissue that lacks protective properties.

Signs and symptoms of gum recession:

It is not visible to the naked eye in its initial phases. However, the signs that have the potential of leading to gum recession includes: loose teeth, halitosis, oral pains or discomfort, bleeding of gums and tenderness.

Gum graft surgery is performed to correct the unevenness and restore the alignment of the gumline. This surgery can reduce further recession of gums, reduce risk of root sensitivity, cover exposed roots and give your teeth a more alluring and cosmetically appealing appearance.

Procedure:

The gumline of the patient is examined for whether or not gum tissue has receded or not. The damaged gum tissue of the patient is replaced by attaching a small amount of tissue (being taken from the roof of the mouth) to the affected site.
Nowadays, as an alternative to patient’s own gum tissue, allograft (tissue from a cadaver) can be used as the gum graft. The tissue from donors is considered safe and effective. Other gum grafting substitutes offered by periodontists are the use of synthetic grafting engineered regeneration proteins, which mimics the biological processes of natural tooth development as they are engineered to stimulate regeneration and wound healing. This procedure can be executed for one tooth or multiple teeth to restore the gum line in a single visit.
